About this place
Samseongsan Retreat House is an education and retreat facility of the Archdiocese of Seoul at 454-16 Hoam-ro, Gwanak-gu, entrusted to the Sisters of Samseongsan Holy Spirit. The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists both the retreat house and the congregation's motherhouse at the same address, showing that retreats and faith formation are offered in close connection with the prayer and spirituality of the religious community.
The Samseongsan Martyrs' Shrine is also located within the same address area, but the retreat house is separately registered as an education and retreat facility. Its purpose and responsible community should therefore be distinguished from the shrine itself.
History & origins
The Sisters of Samseongsan Holy Spirit, who are responsible for Samseongsan Retreat House, are recorded in the Catholic Church Directory in Korea as a congregation founded on August 22, 1990. Their motherhouse is now located at the same address, 454-16 Hoam-ro, as the retreat house. Within this religious-community setting, Samseongsan Retreat House is currently listed by the Archdiocese of Seoul as a facility for education and retreats.
The available official sources do not give an exact opening date for the retreat house itself. August 22, 1990 is therefore used only as the foundation date of the responsible congregation, not as the opening or blessing date of the retreat house or its present building.
