About this place
Samseongsan Catholic Church is a parish of District 13 (Gwanak) of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 545 Hoam-ro, Gwanak-gu. The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment on September 24, 1992, and associates the parish's patronal identity with the Holy Trinity and Saints Laurent Imbert, Pierre Maubant, and Jacques Chastan.
The parish serves the liturgical and pastoral life of local Catholics while also caring for the nearby Samseongsan Martyrs' Shrine. Its distinctive character therefore brings together ordinary parish life and the remembrance of the Korean Church's martyrs.
History & origins
The prehistory of the Samseongsan parish community reaches back to a prayer gathering of Catholics in Sillim 10-dong in 1979 and the opening of the “House of Love” in 1980. After the community secured a temporary church and prepared for a parish of its own, Samseongsan Parish was established on September 24, 1992. Both the parish's detailed chronology and the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea record that it was separated from Sillim-dong Parish.
Land for a new church was acquired in 1993, and groundbreaking took place on November 27, 1994. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated on November 30, 1997; the building was completed in November 1998, and Archbishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk dedicated the church on October 10, 1999. A summary on the current parish homepage names “Seowon-dong” as the mother parish, but the detailed parish chronology and the Catholic Encyclopedia both say “Sillim-dong,” which is therefore used here.
