History & origins

The prehistory of the Samseongsan parish community reaches back to a prayer gathering of Catholics in Sillim 10-dong in 1979 and the opening of the “House of Love” in 1980. After the community secured a temporary church and prepared for a parish of its own, Samseongsan Parish was established on September 24, 1992. Both the parish's detailed chronology and the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea record that it was separated from Sillim-dong Parish.

Land for a new church was acquired in 1993, and groundbreaking took place on November 27, 1994. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated on November 30, 1997; the building was completed in November 1998, and Archbishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk dedicated the church on October 10, 1999. A summary on the current parish homepage names “Seowon-dong” as the mother parish, but the detailed parish chronology and the Catholic Encyclopedia both say “Sillim-dong,” which is therefore used here.
