History & origins

Catholics in the Samgakji area had to travel to Jungnim-dong for Mass, so from around 1947 they began celebrating Sunday Mass in a Catholic family's home in Hangang-ro while preparing for a parish of their own. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that in March 1949 the diocese separated the area from Jungnim-dong Parish, established Sinyongsan Parish, and appointed its first pastor. Around 1960 the parish name was changed to Samgakji.

In 1968 a wooden building in Hangang-ro 1-ga became the temporary church. Ground was broken for a new church on April 11, 1971, and the church, rectory, and convent were completed and dedicated on November 29 of that year. The current church directory, however, gives December 25, 1948 as the establishment date, leaving a documentary distinction between the administrative establishment date and the later historical account of formal separation and appointment of the first pastor.
