History & origins

The Salesian pastoral presence in Daerim-dong reaches back to the late 1960s. According to the official history of Daerim-dong Parish, local Catholics began attending Mass when a Salesian monastery church was built on December 8, 1967. From 1968 the monastery handled various sacraments and pastoral services apart from weddings and funerals, and on January 1, 1971, a Daerim-dong mission station of Dorim-dong Parish was established at the Salesian monastery.

As the community grew, Daerim-dong was elevated to a parish on May 25, 1976, and construction of a new parish church began that year. A Salesian community remains registered in Daerim-dong today and continues ministries including youth work. This chronology documents the Salesian pastoral and monastic presence in the area, but it does not establish the exact administrative foundation date of the present entity called the “Daerim-dong Community.”
