About this place
The Salesian community in Daerim-dong is a Salesian religious community at 424 Digital-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists the superior and vice-superior together with members serving the Salesian Youth Center, showing a community in which religious life and youth ministry are closely joined.
The Salesian presence in Daerim-dong is also deeply connected with the formation of the local parish. Apostolic work accompanying young people in the educational spirituality of Don Bosco, together with service to the local Church, forms an important part of the community's identity.
History & origins
The Salesian pastoral presence in Daerim-dong reaches back to the late 1960s. According to the official history of Daerim-dong Parish, local Catholics began attending Mass when a Salesian monastery church was built on December 8, 1967. From 1968 the monastery handled various sacraments and pastoral services apart from weddings and funerals, and on January 1, 1971, a Daerim-dong mission station of Dorim-dong Parish was established at the Salesian monastery.
As the community grew, Daerim-dong was elevated to a parish on May 25, 1976, and construction of a new parish church began that year. A Salesian community remains registered in Daerim-dong today and continues ministries including youth work. This chronology documents the Salesian pastoral and monastic presence in the area, but it does not establish the exact administrative foundation date of the present entity called the “Daerim-dong Community.”
