About this place

The Sisters of Saint Andrew are a women's institute of consecrated life registered with the Archdiocese of Seoul. Their current directory entry lists representative addresses at the Myeongdong Cathedral Spirituality Center in Seoul and in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do. The international congregation carries forward a long tradition of hospitality and service that seeks to respond to the needs of each age in the light of the Gospel.

The community began within the Rule of Saint Augustine and, in the nineteenth century, incorporated the spiritual tradition of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, strengthening its apostolic and missionary character. The community in Korea continues its religious life within this heritage of encounter and accompaniment in the Church and society.

History & origins

The roots of the Sisters of Saint Andrew reach back to around 1231 in Tournai, in present-day Belgium, where a community welcomed pilgrims traveling toward Santiago de Compostela. The sisters lived according to the Rule of Saint Augustine and, by the fourteenth century, cared for the sick and the poor. When the hospital chapel was dedicated to the Apostle Andrew, the community came to be known as the Sisters of Saint Andrew.

After surviving the upheavals of the French Revolution, the congregation underwent a major renewal in 1857 by adopting the Constitutions of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. It later expanded its mission beyond Europe. The congregation's official history records expansion to Brazil, Congo, France and other places before its arrival in South Korea in 2018.
