Sadang-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 14 (Dongjak) of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 9 Dongjak-daero 13-gil, Dongjak-gu, Seoul. The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment on June 22, 1971 and names St. James the Apostle as its patron.
The community began as a mission station under Myeongsudae Parish and has served as a center of Catholic life in the Sadang area for more than half a century. As the local population and Catholic community expanded, it also became a mother parish from which Dongjak-dong and Sadang 5-dong parishes were later separated.
History & origins
Catholics in the Sadang area originally belonged to Myeongsudae Parish, but the distance created practical difficulties, leading to the establishment of Sadang mission station in 1967. The faithful first gathered in a private home, then purchased land and built a hall in 1970. On June 22, 1971, the mission station was elevated to Sadang-dong Parish.
A new church was completed in 1974, but continued growth led to another building project beginning in 1981, and the present church was completed in December 1983. Dongjak-dong Parish was separated in 1986, followed by Sadang 5-dong Parish in 1997. The parish's history thus moves from mission station to independent parish and eventually to a mother parish for neighboring communities.
