About this place

Pungnap-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul’s 9th Gangdong District, located in Pungnap-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul. Its patron is St. Paul Chong Hasang. The Korean Catholic Directory records the parish as established on February 4, 1989, and members of the Sisters of the Blessed Korean Martyrs currently participate in its parish apostolate.

As the local parish for Catholics in the Pungnap-dong area, it is a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life, serving a Catholic community that developed alongside the urban growth of the Songpa area south of the Han River.

History & origins

The roots of Pungnap-dong Parish go back to 1987, when Catholics in Pungnap-dong and Seongnae-dong, then under Cheonho-dong Parish, began preparing a separate community. They formed a committee for a mission station and secured land for a future church. In February 1988 they rented space in a commercial building in Seongnae-dong and established the Pungnap-dong mission station; in October that year, Bishop Paul Kim Ok-gyun presided at its first Mass.

The mission station was elevated to an independent parish on February 4, 1989. Its beginnings reflect the expansion of the Church in southeastern Seoul as new parishes were created in response to rapid residential development and a growing Catholic population in the Songpa and Gangdong areas.
