About this place
Oksu-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul’s 8th Seongdong-Gwangjin District, located at 207 Dokseodang-ro, Seongdong-gu. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists the Resurrection of Jesus as its patronal mystery and notes the participation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the parish apostolate.
It is the local church where Catholics in Oksu-dong and the nearby Han River residential area gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Because the parish emerged from Geumho-dong Parish during the urban expansion of the 1970s, its identity also reflects the growth of the Catholic community alongside changes in this part of Seongdong-gu.
History & origins
Oksu-dong Parish was established in September 1973 after being separated from Geumho-dong Parish. Oral-history testimony from a Maryknoll missionary who served the new parish records that the community began in a rented two-story house and then built a rectory and a two-story parish building.
At the time, Oksu-dong was a low-income residential area with many migrants from other provinces and factory workers. The parish’s ministry included a credit union, Young Christian Workers (JOC) activities, care for the sick, and home visits, placing pastoral work in close contact with the daily lives of local residents.
These early years show that Oksu-dong Parish was not simply a new administrative parish but a local church shaped within Seoul’s 1970s urbanization and its communities of migrants and workers.
