오금동(지) 성당

History & origins

Ogeum-dong Parish was established on October 13, 1989, after being separated from Sincheon-dong Parish. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea explains that large-scale residential development and population growth in the Jamsil-Ogeum area during the 1980s created the need for a new parish, and that about 2,650 Catholics formed the new community at the time of separation.

The parish then developed its own church and pastoral facilities. A rectory was secured in August 1993, and construction of a new church began that December. The completed church was dedicated on September 8, 1996, in a liturgy presided over by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan.

This development illustrates how the Archdiocese of Seoul responded to rapid growth in the Songpa area by creating a new local parish and gradually providing it with an independent church complex.
