About this place

Nowon Catholic Church, officially listed as “Nowon (Ji),” is a central parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Nowon District 5 at 585 Hangeulbiseok-ro in Nowon-gu. It was established on February 4, 1989, and has St. Matthew the Apostle as its patron.

The official directory continues to retain the “(Ji)” designation and also lists the head of the Nowon district. At present, however, the district head and the parish pastor are listed as different priests, so the suffix should not automatically be interpreted as meaning that the parish pastor personally holds the district-head office.

History & origins

Nowon Parish was formed in February 1989 amid rapid growth of the Catholic community in the Sanggye area. The current Catholic Church Directory gives February 4 as the establishment date, while the official history of Sanggye-dong Parish records the separation of Nowon on February 16, and Nowon's priest history records the first pastor beginning on February 26.

These dates can reasonably represent different administrative and pastoral stages—formal establishment, separation from the mother parish, and arrival of the first pastor—so they are preserved rather than collapsed into a single event. The parish later became a central community of Nowon District 5.
