노틀담 수녀회
Religious house
About this place
The Seoul community of the Sisters of Notre Dame is a women's religious house at 54 Bukchon-ro in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The Korean province belongs to the Sisters of Notre Dame tradition developed at Coesfeld, Germany, and emphasizes making visible the goodness and provident love of God through religious life and education.
The Seoul house is both a community residence and a base supporting educational and catechetical ministries in Bukchon. The Notre Dame Education Center at the same address is a retreat and education facility and should be distinguished from this religious-community record.
History & origins
The direct congregational lineage of today's Korean Sisters of Notre Dame is rooted in the community established at Coesfeld, Germany, in October 1850. The Korean Catholic Church Directory also uses October 1, 1850, as the foundation date and records July 7, 1967, as the congregation's arrival in Korea.
The first missionary sisters established a community in Gye-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and began educational ministry, later expanding into schools, parishes, welfare, retreats, and catechetical work. A Seoul branch now exists at 54 Bukchon-ro, but the exact opening date of this present branch is not publicly documented; the 1967 Korean arrival is therefore not equated with the opening of the current house.
