About this place
Notre Dame Education Center is an education and retreat facility of the Sisters of Notre Dame at 54 Bukchon-ro in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The Catholic Church Directory classifies it as a retreat center, and the congregation describes its mission as communicating God's goodness and the joy of the Gospel through retreats and educational programs.
The same address also houses the Seoul religious community and several institutes related to catechesis and music education. This record refers specifically to the education and retreat-center function and is distinct from the sisters' residential community at the same site.
History & origins
After entering Korea in 1967, the Sisters of Notre Dame expanded an educational mission that came to include parish, school, welfare, catechetical, and retreat ministries. In Seoul's Jongno area, religious community and educational works developed, and today the Bukchon-ro 54 site includes the Notre Dame retreat center and several educational research institutes.
The public official sources reviewed do not state the exact opening date of the Notre Dame Education Center itself. Therefore, the congregation's 1967 arrival in Korea is not treated as the center's opening date; only the documented continuity of its education and retreat ministry is stated.
