About this place

Nonhyeon-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Gangnam District 11 at 5 Nonhyeon-ro 119-gil. It was established on May 25, 1976, and is dedicated to Jesus the Good Shepherd.

The roots of the community reach back to the Eongubi mission station in the early 1930s. After passing under the care of several neighboring parishes, the mission grew into an independent parish as urban development and the Catholic population expanded. It now serves the Nonhyeon area through liturgy, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.

History & origins

A Catholic community existed in the Nonhyeon area from the early 1930s through the Eongubi mission station. It later passed under the care of neighboring parishes including Yangjae and Cheongdam. In August 1974 Cheongdam Parish reorganized the local mission as Nonhyeon mission station, accelerating preparations for an independent parish. Church construction began in 1975, and Nonhyeon was elevated to parish status on May 25, 1976.

The first church was consecrated on October 15, 1977. As membership grew, a larger church was built in the late 1980s and dedicated by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan on December 4, 1988. Nonhyeon 2-dong Parish separated in 1993, reshaping the parish territory once again.
