About this place

Nonhyeon 2-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Gangnam District 11 at 17 Seolleung-ro 145-gil. It was established on October 18, 1993, and has St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Korea's first priest and martyr, as its patron.

The parish was formed from portions of the Apgujeong, Nonhyeon, and Cheongdam communities and serves Catholics in Nonhyeon 2-dong and nearby areas. Relics of St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon are enshrined in the present church, giving the parish a particularly direct connection to its patron and the Korean martyr tradition.

History & origins

After purchasing much of its present site in March 1993, Nonhyeon 2-dong Parish received archdiocesan approval on October 18. Its first pastor arrived on November 5, and the first Mass was celebrated on the parish property on November 7. A prefabricated church was begun in 1994 and blessed in July 1995.

As part of parish reorganization in the Apgujeong area, the name changed to Hakdong Parish in 1999, but it returned to Nonhyeon 2-dong in July 2003. Groundbreaking Mass for a new church was held in May 2004; the first Mass in the new church took place in March 2006, and Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk dedicated it on October 22. Relics of St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon were also enshrined that year.
