Nogosan Martyrs' Shrine is a Catholic martyr site in front of Gabriel Hall at Sogang University, 35 Baekbeom-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul. It is remembered as the place where the bodies of St. Laurent Imbert, St. Pierre Maubant, and St. Jacques Chastan, martyred at Saenamteo during the Gihae Persecution, were buried for about four years.
Rather than functioning as a territorial parish church, the shrine is a place of pilgrimage within the university campus where visitors remember the faith and martyrdom of the three missionary priests. The Sogang University chaplaincy is responsible for the site.
History & origins
During the Gihae Persecution of 1839, Bishop Laurent Imbert, apostolic vicar of Korea, and Fathers Pierre Maubant and Jacques Chastan were martyred at Saenamteo. Their bodies were then buried in the Nogosan area outside the old city and remained there for roughly four years before being transferred elsewhere.
The historical memory of the site continued after Sogang University was established in the area. On June 15, 2009, the university erected and blessed a memorial monument to the three missionaries in front of Gabriel Hall. Nogosan is now preserved as a pilgrimage site recalling mission and martyrdom in the early Korean Church.
