About this place

Namdaemun Market Catholic Church is a quasi-parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul located on the eighth floor of Geumo Building, 61 Toegye-ro, Jung-gu. It was established on September 17, 1999, and has St. Teresa of Calcutta as its patron.

Unlike a conventional residential parish, it is a market-ministry community shaped around the working lives of merchants and employees in Namdaemun Market. Alongside Mass and the sacraments, it fosters fellowship among market Catholics and outreach to people in need, seeking to live the Gospel in the heart of the marketplace.

History & origins

The Namdaemun Market Catholic community formally began on September 17, 1999, when the Archdiocese of Seoul created the market church and appointed its first pastor. To secure a stable worship space within the market area, the community prepared its present facilities in Geumo Building the following year.

Work on the church space began in June 2000, the first Mass there was celebrated on October 15, and the church was dedicated on November 17. The community subsequently developed both pastoral care for market workers and forms of outreach to homeless and vulnerable people.
