About this place

Nakseongdae-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Gwanak District 13 at 26 Nakseongdae-ro in Gwanak-gu. It was established on September 22, 2005, and has the Korean martyr St. Paul Chong Ha-sang as its patron.

In addition to serving Catholics around Nakseongdae through Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis, the parish also carries responsibility for Catholic ministry at Seoul National University. Its pastor concurrently serves the university apostolate and Mass is celebrated on campus, linking territorial parish life with university ministry.

History & origins

The predecessor of Nakseongdae-dong Parish was the Bongcheon 7-dong mission station created in May 2004 by what was then Nakseongdae Parish, now Haengun-dong Parish. A building for the mission was purchased in October, and the first thanksgiving Mass was celebrated there in December, providing a base for an independent community.

On September 22, 2005, it was approved as Bongcheon 7-dong Parish and later continued under the current name Nakseongdae-dong. Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk dedicated the church in April 2007. The 2004 mission station, 2005 parish establishment, and 2007 church dedication are separate stages.
