About this place

Myeonmokdong Catholic Church is a parish of District 7, Dongdaemun-Jungnang, in the Archdiocese of Seoul. It was established on September 6, 1974, and honors Saint James the Apostle as its patron.

The parish grew with the rapid expansion of residential neighborhoods in Myeonmok. It continues to serve as a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. Its early effort to build worship and pastoral spaces in response to population growth remains an important part of its character.

History & origins

Rapid residential development in Myeonmok in the early 1970s brought a sharp increase in population and Catholics. Plans were therefore made to form a new parish from territory served by Sangbong and Junggok. The present site was secured in July 1974, construction began in August, and Myeonmokdong Parish was formally established on September 6.

The first Mass at the construction site was celebrated on September 30, 1974. The church, rectory, and catechetical rooms were completed in November, and Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan presided at the blessing on April 23, 1975, establishing the physical and pastoral foundation of the new parish.
