About this place

Myeongildong Catholic Church is a parish of District 9, Gangdong, in the eastern region of the Archdiocese of Seoul. It was established on August 19, 1987, and honors the Holy Family as its patron.

The parish was created amid the growth of the Myeongil and Godeok areas and the corresponding increase in Catholics. It now serves local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities. Its formation from territory previously served by Cheonho, Amsa, and Godeok parishes reflects the development of Catholic communities in eastern Seoul.

History & origins

Myeongildong Parish was established as apartment development and population growth in Gangdong increased the number of Catholics served by existing parishes. On August 19, 1987, it became an independent parish through the division of territory from Cheonho, Amsa, and Godeok.

The historical record of Amsa Parish notes that 1,365 Catholics in the Godeok area were transferred when Myeongildong was created. The new parish thus formed part of the broader expansion of parish structures in eastern Seoul in response to rapid urban growth.
