About this place

Munjeong-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 10, Songpa, in the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 14 Songi-ro 37ga-gil in Songpa-gu. It was established as a parish on October 13, 1989, and celebrates the Ascension of the Lord as its patronal feast.

Before the parish was formally established, a temporary church and mission community had already been created in Munjeong-dong. As that community grew into an independent parish, it became the local center for Mass, the sacraments, and faith formation for Catholics in the area.

History & origins

The prehistory of Munjeong-dong Parish took shape in February 1987, when land for a church was secured in the Munjeong-dong 141 area. A prefabricated temporary church was then built, and on May 15, 1988, it was blessed and the first Mass was celebrated, establishing a mission community.

As the community grew, Munjeong-dong Parish was formally established on October 13, 1989. On October 29 of the same month, Fr. Kim Chung-su arrived as the first pastor and began parish ministry. The sources distinguish October 13 as the date of parish establishment and October 29 as the first pastor's arrival, so the two dates should not be treated as the same event.
