About this place
Muakdong Catholic Church is a missionary parish of District 2, Seodaemun-Mapo, in the central region of the Archdiocese of Seoul. It was established on February 18, 1999. The current Catholic Directory lists the parish in Haengchon-dong together with contact information for the Independence Gate Peace House.
Unlike a parish formed primarily through ordinary territorial division, this community developed within a missionary ministry focused on residents of redevelopment districts and the urban poor. Its history of accompanying local residents in matters of community life, rights, and welfare makes field-based social pastoral ministry an important part of its identity.
History & origins
The background of Muakdong Missionary Parish lies in community work carried out in the redevelopment districts around Muakdong and Independence Gate in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Catholic pastoral workers lived alongside residents, responded to displacement and housing issues, and helped organize local communities.
Within this field ministry, Muakdong Missionary Parish was established in 1999 as a community designed to accompany residents more closely in redevelopment areas. The current directory's listing of the Independence Gate Peace House office alongside the parish reflects the continuing link between the parish and community-based social ministry.
