Mokdong Catholic Church is the district-seat parish for District 18, Yangcheon, in the western region of the Archdiocese of Seoul. The Catholic Directory records its establishment date as June 14, 1972, while the Catholic Encyclopedia identifies Saint Paul the Apostle as its patron.
The office of District 18 is located at Mokdong Church, so the parish serves both its local community and as a pastoral point of coordination for the district. Its roots reach back to an older mission-station tradition, and the community experienced the major social and urban changes that transformed Mokdong before and after the New Town development.
History & origins
Catholic community life in Mokdong began in 1923 with the Mokdong-ri Majang mission station under Haengju Parish. Its jurisdiction changed several times, and a distinct Mokdong mission station was organized in 1965. As migrants and Catholics moved into the area, the community was elevated to Mokdong Parish on June 14, 1972.
Deungchon Parish was separated in 1973 and Sinjeong Parish in 1976. The development of Mokdong New Town in the 1980s profoundly changed the population and pastoral environment. A new permanent church was eventually completed in 1996. Today Mokdong also serves as the district-seat parish of District 18, Yangcheon.
