About this place
Mok 5-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 18, Yangcheon, in the western region of the Archdiocese of Seoul. It was established as a parish on February 6, 1987, and honors the Holy Family as its patron.
It is one of the urban parishes formed with the development of Mokdong New Town and serves local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities. It began under the name Mok 1-dong Parish and later took the name Mok 5-dong during the period of constructing its permanent church.
History & origins
The origins of Mok 5-dong Parish go back to 1986, when residents were moving into Mokdong New Town. A mission station was organized in January of that year and the first Mass was celebrated in a Catholic family's apartment. Rapid growth led to the establishment of Mok 1-dong Parish on February 6, 1987.
When construction of a permanent church began in June 1990, the parish was renamed Mok 5-dong. Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan presided at the dedication of the new church on June 5, 1994. Continued growth later led to the creation of Mok 4-dong Parish in 2008, further dividing pastoral responsibility in the Mokdong area.
