About this place

Mia-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 6, Dobong-Gangbuk, in the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 62 Dobong-ro 49-gil in Gangbuk-gu. It was established on September 23, 1968, and honors the Korean martyr St. John the Baptist Nam Jong-sam as its patron.

The current directory lists the parish as “Mia-dong,” while historical records refer to it for periods as “Samyang-dong” and “Mia 3-dong.” Through parish divisions and changes of name, the same local community developed into the present Mia-dong Parish.

History & origins

The community now known as Mia-dong Parish began on September 23, 1968, when it was separated from the former Mia-dong Parish, today's Gireum-dong Parish, and established under the name “Samyang-dong Parish.” The new parish reflected the growth of population and the Catholic community in northern Seoul.

On August 26, 1982, Mia 5-dong Parish was separated from it, and the existing Samyang-dong Parish was renamed “Mia 3-dong Parish.” The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists the same continuing parish as “Mia-dong.” The sources reviewed here, however, do not establish the exact date on which the later change from “Mia 3-dong” to the present “Mia-dong” name occurred.
