마리스타 교육관

Retreat center

About this place

Marista Education Center, at 37 Tojeong-ro 2-gil in Mapo-gu, Seoul, is listed by the Archdiocese of Seoul as an education and retreat facility entrusted to the Marist Brothers. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea also places a Marist Brothers community and its headquarters at the same address.

The Marist Brothers have long centered their mission on the education of young people. Accordingly, this place is not an ordinary territorial parish but an education and retreat setting intended to support young people and faith communities through retreats, catechesis, and religious formation.

History & origins

The Marist Brothers were founded in France by St. Marcellin Champagnat on January 2, 1817, and the Catholic Church Directory in Korea records September 13, 1971, as the date of their arrival in Korea. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea states that, after establishing themselves in Korea, the Brothers built an education center at their Hapjeong-dong headquarters in Seoul and used it mainly for retreats and catechetical education.

Today the Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists the facility at 37 Tojeong-ro 2-gil as an “education center and retreat house.” The exact opening date of the present center was not established in the public sources reviewed, so this chronology is limited to the congregation's foundation, its Korean mission, and the documented function of the center.
