마리아의 종 수녀회
Religious house
About this place
The Seoul branch of the Servants of Mary is a religious community at 20 Haedeung-ro 17-gil, Ssangmun-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists it as the congregation's “Seoul branch.”
The congregation looks to Mary as a model of service and has devoted its religious life to serving the Church and neighbor. The Ssangmun-dong branch is the congregation's Seoul community, where religious life and service continue within its Korean mission.
History & origins
The Servants of Mary were founded by Fr. Ferdinando Baccilieri in Galeazza, Italy, on June 23, 1862. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that two sisters first entered Korea in September 1982, spent about two years in Seoul studying Korean and catechetical theology, and then established a convent in Cheongju in September 1985, beginning their full apostolic work.
The Catholic Church Directory in Korea gives September 15, 1985, as the congregation's date of entry into Korea. The two sources therefore appear to distinguish the sisters' first arrival from the establishment of a regular community. A Seoul branch is now listed in Ssangmun-dong, but its exact opening date was not established in the public sources reviewed.
