History & origins

The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary were founded by Mary of the Passion on January 6, 1877, and the Catholic Church Directory in Korea records June 26, 1958, as the congregation's date of arrival in Korea. Several religious communities later developed in Korea, and the current directory separately lists the “Seoul Emmaus Community” in Mia-dong.

The exact foundation or relocation date of the Emmaus Community itself was not established in the official public sources reviewed. The history of the congregation and the present existence of the community are therefore kept distinct, and the 1958 Korean arrival date is not treated as the foundation date of the Mia-dong community.
