마리아 수녀회
Religious house
About this place
The Seoul branch of the Sisters of Mary is a religious community of The Sisters of Mary in Eungam-dong, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists it as a religious branch within the Archdiocese of Seoul at 20-15 Baengnyeonsan-ro 14-gil.
The Sisters of Mary developed around a mission of caring for poor children, young people, and others in need. The Eungam-dong community is therefore significant as a Seoul base of the congregation and as a place that continues the service to the poor emphasized by its founder, Fr. Aloysius Schwartz.
History & origins
The Sisters of Mary began in Busan on August 15, 1964, when Fr. Aloysius Schwartz organized a community to care for war orphans and poor patients. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that the group first began as the “Mary Mothers' Association” and took on the form of a religious community when the sisters began wearing a habit the following year.
A key step connecting the congregation to Seoul came in 1974. The same source records that a branch was established in Eungam-dong to prepare for the operation of the Seoul Boys' Town, which was to open the next year. The current Catholic Church Directory still lists the Seoul branch in Eungam-dong, confirming the location as a longstanding base of the congregation's ministry in Seoul.
