About this place
Majang-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 8, Seongdong-Gwangjin, in the eastern region of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located in Majang-dong, Seongdong-gu. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the parish as established on September 24, 1996, and names St. Paul Chong Hasang as its patron.
Today Majang-dong Parish is a center where local Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Its patronage by St. Paul Chong Hasang, one of the Korean martyrs, is an important element of the parish's religious identity.
History & origins
The Majang-dong Catholic community traces its organized beginnings to 1992. According to the parish's official history, approval was given for the Sageun-dong mission station on April 29 of that year, and the mission station opened on November 15. As the community grew, it was elevated to Majang-dong Parish on September 24, 1996, and its first pastor arrived on October 11.
The parish purchased land for a church in February 1998 and began construction of a new church in October 1999. The building was completed in May 2000, and the church was dedicated on May 13, 2001. The development from a mission station to a parish and then to a dedicated permanent church forms the central story of Majang-dong Parish's early history.
