About this place

Macheondong Catholic Church is a parish of District 10, Songpa, in the eastern region of the Archdiocese of Seoul. The parish was established on September 17, 1971, and honors Saint Augustine as its patron.

Its roots lie in a mission-station community formed among Catholics who settled in the Macheon and Geoyeo area. Today it serves local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life, while also reflecting the growth of Catholic communities alongside the urban development of southeastern Seoul.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Macheon and Geoyeo took shape in the late 1960s under Cheonho Parish. A mission station was organized in Geoyeo in 1967, and after a church and rectory were prepared, the community was separated from Cheonho and established as a parish on September 17, 1971. It was initially called Geoyeo-dong Parish.

In March 1981 the parish name was changed to Macheondong. As the Catholic population grew, construction of a new church began in 1981 and the church and related facilities were completed in November 1983. Subsequent urban development in Songpa brought territorial adjustments and the formation of additional parishes, shaping the present Macheondong community.
