About this place
This location is St. Bonaventure Friary and House of Studies of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, at 35 Hyehwa-ro 6ga-gil in Jongno-gu, Seoul. It is a community distinct from the provincial headquarters in Hannam-dong and houses friars involved in theological study and religious formation.
The Conventual Franciscans belong to the First Order tradition begun by St. Francis of Assisi and emphasize Gospel poverty, fraternity, peace, and mission. The St. Bonaventure community in Hyehwa is centered especially on the formation and theological education of younger friars.
History & origins
The Conventual Franciscans trace their roots to the Order of Friars Minor begun by St. Francis of Assisi in the thirteenth century. The Catholic Church Directory uses April 16, 1209, as the order's foundation date and records its arrival in Korea in October 1958.
In Korea the friars expanded into parish ministry, religious formation, spiritual assistance to the Secular Franciscan Order, retreats, publishing, and other apostolates. St. Bonaventure Friary and House of Studies now operates in Hyehwa-dong, but its exact local opening date is not stated in the public official sources reviewed. The dates 1209 and 1958 are therefore not presented as the foundation date of the Hyehwa community.
