About this place

Yakhyeon Catholic Church in Jungnim-dong, at 447-1 Cheongpa-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul, is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul’s 1st Jung-gu–Yongsan District and a nationally designated Historic Site. Completed in 1892, the present church is regarded as Korea’s first modern brick Gothic Catholic church. The Korean Catholic Directory identifies it as a St. Joseph parish and a memorial church associated with the Seosomun Martyrs’ Site.

Its significance lies in the way a long-lived parish community, the memory of the early Korean martyrs, and the heritage of modern Catholic architecture come together in one place.

History & origins

The Yakhyeon community traces its origins to a mission station established in 1887 at Suretgol, in the present-day Sunhwa-dong area, under Myeongdong Parish. It was separated from Myeongdong in 1891 and became the second parish in Seoul; the current Korean Catholic Directory gives November 9, 1891, as its establishment date.

The church was built under the design and supervision of Fr. Eugène Jean Georges Coste and was completed in September 1892. Its architectural importance as an early Western-style brick Gothic church led to its designation as a Historic Site on November 22, 1977. It remains an important witness to the early Catholic community of Seoul and to the history of modern church architecture in Korea.
