중계동 성당

History & origins

Junggye-dong Parish was established in August 1990 from the neighboring parishes of Nowon, Sanggye-dong, and Gongneung-dong. At its founding it had about 4,500 faithful and began parish life in rented sixth- and seventh-floor space in Jangwoo Building in Sanggye 6-dong.

As membership grew, the parish purchased part of the third floor of a commercial building in 1992, and in September of that year Sanggye 2-dong Parish was separated from it. From 2003 the community used the entire third floor as its church, but the need for a freestanding parish complex remained.

In August 2012 the parish purchased land for a new church, and by 2018 construction was in its final phase. The parish’s present home at 80 Deongneung-ro 70-gil is the result of a long process that moved the community from rented rooms and commercial space to its own church site.
