About this place
Jungang-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul’s 13th Gwanak District, located at 174 Euncheon-ro, Gwanak-gu, Seoul. The current Korean Catholic Directory records the parish as established on August 10, 1969, with St. John the Baptist as its patron.
Its present name dates from 2009, when the Archdiocese of Seoul revised a number of parish names to reflect changes in administrative districts and the former Bongcheon-dong Parish became Jungang-dong Parish. It serves Catholics in Jungang-dong and the surrounding part of Gwanak-gu through the Mass, sacraments, and parish community life.
History & origins
The present Jungang-dong Parish was established on August 10, 1969, when it was separated from Sangdo-dong Parish under the name Bongcheon-dong Parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that the site of the present church had been purchased on May 10 of that year in preparation for the new parish.
As local names and administrative districts in the Bongcheon area changed, the parish name was later adjusted. In 2009, the Archdiocese of Seoul revised several parish names to match administrative changes, and Bongcheon-dong Parish was renamed Jungang-dong Parish, the name it uses today.
