About this place
Central Veterans Hospital Quasi-Parish is a quasi-parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul’s 9th Gangdong District located inside the Central Veterans Health Service Medical Center in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, and serves as a center for Catholic hospital chaplaincy. The Korean Catholic Directory records its establishment as a quasi-parish on February 21, 2002, with Our Lady of Sorrows as its patron.
The Archdiocese of Seoul Hospital Pastoral Committee lists Sunday and weekday Masses as well as Anointing of the Sick, Communion for the sick, baptism, and emergency baptism among the ministries offered here. Unlike a territorial parish, its defining pastoral role is to accompany patients, families, and hospital staff within the hospital.
History & origins
Catholic ministry at Central Veterans Hospital developed in earnest in 1987, when an assistant priest from Dunchon-dong Parish began celebrating Mass there once a month. From 1988 a religious sister was assigned to the hospital, weekly Mass was celebrated, and a Catholic community among patients and staff gradually took shape.
Construction of a dedicated church began in October 1990, and the church was consecrated on December 12, 1991. The first priest formally assigned to hospital chaplaincy arrived in 2001, and on February 21, 2002, the community was elevated to the status of a quasi-parish. The church was renovated and blessed again in 2017, and Catholic liturgical and sacramental ministry has continued amid changes in the hospital environment.
