About this place

Jongam-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Seongbuk district of the Seoul Archdiocese, serving local Catholics from 82 Jongam-ro in Seongbuk-gu. Its official website introduces it as “Jongam-dong Choe Yang-eop Thomas Catholic Church,” placing Father Thomas Choe Yang-eop, Korea’s second Catholic priest, at the center of the parish’s identity.

Although relatively young as a parish, it has become an established center of local Catholic life with a main church, hall, and meeting spaces. The dedication to Father Choe Yang-eop gives the community a distinctive missionary symbol as it seeks to continue a life of evangelization and service in the neighborhood.

History & origins

Jongam-dong Parish was established as a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese on March 22, 2002. From its beginning it served as an independent Catholic community for the Jongam-dong area, and the parish today carries the name of Father Thomas Choe Yang-eop.

The new parish quickly developed a permanent worship complex. On September 14, 2003, its new church was dedicated in a liturgy presided over by Archbishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk. At the time, the building comprised one basement and four above-ground floors, including the main church, dining and meeting rooms, classrooms, and a rectory.

The close succession of parish establishment and church dedication gave the community a stable pastoral foundation within a short period. The present parish life in Jongam-dong grew from this early process of building both a community and the physical spaces needed to sustain it.
