About this place
Jeonnong-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese serving the Jeonnong-dong area of Dongdaemun-gu. It provides the local Catholic community with liturgy and sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. The parish is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, known in Korean as “Seongmo Chilgo,” and its church symbolism also reflects the Seven Sorrows of Mary.
Today the parish continues the faith life of a long-established local community through worship, Sunday school, devotional groups, and apostolic activities. The parish itself presents the spirituality of Our Lady of Sorrows as a central element of its identity, making this devotion an important key to understanding the community.
History & origins
Jeonnong-dong Parish was established on December 18, 1965, when it was separated from Cheongnyangni Parish. On the same date its first pastor, Father Moses Choe Gwang-yeon, took office and the new parish began its independent pastoral life.
As the original church aged, the community undertook the construction of a new sanctuary. The new church was dedicated on January 11, 2004, in a liturgy presided over by Archbishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, then Archbishop of Seoul, and it became the principal worship space used by the parish today.
The parish marked its 60th anniversary in 2025. Its development from a community separated from Cheongnyangni into a long-established local parish reflects the broader growth and subdivision of Catholic communities in northeastern Seoul.
