About this place

The Seoul community of the Carmelite Missionaries is an apostolic Carmelite women’s religious community in Sajik-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists this address as the Seoul branch of the Carmelite Missionaries, and the same site also houses the “Seoul House of Spirituality,” a retreat and formation facility entrusted to the congregation.

The community’s apostolate seeks to carry the Carmelite tradition of contemplation and prayer into missionary and pastoral service in everyday life. The Sajik-dong house is therefore both a religious community and a place where individuals and groups can step away from ordinary routines for prayer, retreat, and spiritual reflection.

History & origins

The Carmelite Missionaries were founded in Barcelona, Spain, in 1860 by the Carmelite priest Francisco Palau. He envisioned a community that would hold contemplation and pastoral activity together, and in 1907 Pope Pius X approved the congregation as an institute of pontifical right.

The congregation entered Korea in 1977. After Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan authorized the mission that June, two sisters from the Philippine province arrived on August 21. They first stayed with the Carmelite community in Suyu-ri and then moved on September 6 to a house in Sinmun-ro, where they began an independent community life.

The Korean community subsequently moved several times while developing its formation and apostolic foundations. A novitiate in Gyesan-dong, Incheon, was completed in 1983, making formation in Korea possible, and the Seoul community eventually settled in Sajik-dong in 1990. The present Seoul branch thus stands within the longer history of the congregation’s establishment in Korea.
