About this place
Jeongneung-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Seongbuk district of the Seoul Archdiocese, serving the local Catholic community from 175 Jeongneung-ro in Seongbuk-gu. The parish is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and sisters of the Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help participate in its pastoral ministry.
Situated in the Jeongneung neighborhood near the foothills of Bukhansan, the parish has long served as a center for worship, formation, and local pastoral life. It also became the mother parish of Jeongneung 4-dong Parish, linking it to the broader development of Catholic communities in the Seongbuk area.
History & origins
Jeongneung-dong Parish began in September 1968 when it was separated from Mia-ri Parish, now Gireum-dong Parish. The early community celebrated Mass in a temporary setting that included a tent and a modest concrete-block chapel of about forty pyeong while establishing the foundations of parish life.
Construction of a permanent church began in 1972, and in September 1973 the newly built church was inaugurated in a liturgy presided over by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan. The parish, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, thus established a more stable Catholic presence in the Jeongneung area.
In the 1990s the parish pursued plans to relocate and build a larger church to accommodate growing membership. The plan changed, however, as the archdiocese emphasized smaller parish communities. In 2001 Jeongneung 4-dong Parish was separated, dividing pastoral responsibility into more localized communities within the Jeongneung area.
