History & origins

The Catholic community in Jegi-dong took concrete shape before the parish itself was established. In 1932 the Seoul church acquired a thatched house and land in the area, and a mission community developed there under the care of Hyehwa-dong Parish. On May 16, 1942, it became an independent parish, with Father John Colin of the Paris Foreign Missions Society as its first pastor.

At first the community used its mission house as a temporary chapel and completed a small church in 1943. After the Korean War, growth in membership led the parish to acquire the site of the present church in 1954, and construction of a new stone church began the following year.

Despite interruptions, the community completed a two-story, semi-Gothic stone church in August 1959 and celebrated its dedication. Jegi-dong later contributed to the expansion of Catholic life in northeastern Seoul, including the establishment of Cheongnyangni Parish, and in 2002 it marked sixty years as a parish.
