History & origins

The current Korean Catholic directory records Janghanpyeong Parish as established on September 22, 2005, and the Seoul Archdiocesan bulletin likewise states that it was created in September 2005 from Dapsimni and Jangan-dong parishes. After its foundation the community had to move through rented commercial buildings and other temporary worship spaces.

In 2008 the parish suffered a major setback when a building it was using was demolished in the course of redevelopment, forcing another move. The community formally launched its permanent church-building effort in 2010, chose the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary as its patronal title, and continued preparing for a stable church home.

Groundbreaking for the new church took place on March 31, 2013, and the Seoul bulletin records that the church was finally dedicated in September 2018. A 2013 Catholic Times report described the parish as having separated from Jangan-dong in October 2005, so the sources differ by a month; this account follows the current directory and Seoul bulletin, which both give September.
