History & origins

As population and Catholic numbers increased in Jangan-dong, the Seoul Archdiocese purchased the present church site in 1974 in preparation for separating a new parish from Jeonnong-dong. Jangan-dong Parish was formally established on August 18, 1978, and its first Mass was celebrated on September 9 in a temporary chapel on the second floor of a parishioner's building.

Groundbreaking for a permanent church took place on September 27, 1978. Because of financial constraints, construction proceeded in two stages: the basement and first floor were completed in 1979, and a second phase began in 1981 and was completed that autumn.

The finished church was dedicated on September 27, 1982 with Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan presiding. Additional facilities, including a priest's residence and convent, were later developed, helping the parish become an established Catholic community in Jangan-dong.
