The Queen of Peace Friary in Seongbuk-dong, Seoul, is a Franciscan formation community at 9-6 Seonjam-ro, Seongbuk-gu. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea directory lists it as the “Queen of Peace Friary / formation house / theologate,” making clear that religious community life and formation are combined at this site.
The current community includes a guardian, directors responsible for temporary professed friars and postulants, a director of formation and studies, and student friars. The house is therefore more than a residence: it is an important formation center of the Korean Franciscan Province where younger friars are accompanied through entry, vows, academic study, and community life.
History & origins
The Franciscan community in Korea became an autonomous Korean province in October 1969. As the province developed, it needed a more structured place for the formation and theological education of vocations and younger friars, leading to the establishment of a dedicated formation base in Seongbuk-dong.
Catholic historical sources record that the “Queen of Peace Theologate” in Seongbuk-dong was completed in July 1971. This is the clearest documented starting point for the history of the present Seongbuk-dong site.
The same address is now listed as the “Queen of Peace Friary / formation house / theologate.” The place that took shape as a theologate in 1971 continues to combine a religious community with formation functions, remaining one of the principal centers of Franciscan formation in Korea.
