About this place
Ilwondong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul in Gangnam-gu and belongs to the 11th Gangnam District of the eastern Seoul pastoral region. Although the parish is named after Ilwon-dong, its present church is located at 38 Gaepo-ro 109-gil in Gaepo-dong.
Serving a residential area in southeastern Gangnam, the parish sustains Catholic life through the Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community activities. It functions as a local center connecting the daily faith life of Catholics from Ilwon-dong and nearby neighborhoods.
History & origins
Ilwondong Parish began on February 22, 1994, when the Archdiocese of Seoul established several new parishes. It was formed from portions of Gaepodong and Suseodong parishes, and the official history of Gaepodong Parish likewise records the separation of Ilwondong Parish in the same period.
The separation was part of a pastoral response to residential development and the growth of the Catholic population in southeastern Gangnam. Ilwondong subsequently developed as an independent parish and continues today as a parish of the Gangnam District.
