About this place

Hongeun-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul’s 2nd Seodaemun–Mapo District, located at 129 Segeomjeong-ro 1-gil. Established on February 19, 2004, it is dedicated to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. It was created from Hongje-dong Parish to provide closer pastoral care for Catholics in parts of the Hongeun and Hongje areas.

Its foundation was part of a broader effort to divide the pastoral responsibilities of the large Hongje-dong community into more local parish units. Today Hongeun-dong functions as an independent parish serving the liturgical, sacramental, educational, and communal life of local Catholics.

History & origins

The establishment of Hongeun-dong Parish grew out of plans to divide the increasingly large Hongje-dong Parish. In the early 2000s Hongje began preparing new parishes for the Hongje 4-dong and Hongeun areas, and in December 2003 it purchased a 249-pyeong site for the future Hongeun church.

On February 19, 2004, Hongeun-dong Parish was formally separated from Hongje-dong. Hongje Parish’s official chronology records that the new parish began around 25-1 Hongeun-dong, with 859 households and 2,405 Catholics transferred to it, covering Hongeun 1-dong, Hongeun 2-dong, and part of Hongje 3-dong. The current Catholic directory records the same date as the parish’s establishment.

The birth of Hongeun-dong, together with the separation of Hongje 4-dong Parish in the same period, reorganized the large Hongje pastoral territory into more local communities. Hongeun-dong has since developed as an independent parish under the patronage of the Holy Family.
