History & origins

Hongeun 2-dong Parish was established in September 2000 after separating from Yeonhui-dong Parish. The Catholic Encyclopedia’s history of Yeonhui records the new community under the name “Hongeun 3-dong Parish” and states that 313 households comprising 774 Catholics were transferred to the new parish. The current Catholic directory gives the establishment date as September 7, 2000.

For a number of years the community operated as Hongeun 3-dong Parish, a name also found in diocesan personnel records from the 2000s. A later GoodNews record concerning diocesan changes states that, effective April 2, 2012, “Hongeun 3-dong Parish” was renamed “Hongeun 2-dong Parish.”

Thus today’s Hongeun 2-dong Parish was not newly founded in 2012; it is the same parish established in 2000 under the earlier name. Reading the two names together is essential to understanding the continuity of the community’s history.
