History & origins

Hagye-dong Parish was approved by the Archdiocese of Seoul on September 24, 1992 after being separated from Gongneung-dong Parish, and celebrated its first Mass on October 8 of that year. At its foundation, the community numbered 954 households and 2,512 Catholics.

As the parish grew, construction of a new church progressed. A topping-out ceremony was held on December 19, 1997, and the first Mass in the new church was celebrated on October 3, 1998. On August 27, 2000, Archbishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk presided at the church’s dedication Mass, completing the establishment of the present parish church.
