History & origins

Haengun-dong Parish began under the name Nakseongdae Parish. The current Catholic directory records its establishment date as February 22, 1994, while a 1999 Catholic Times report states that Nakseongdae Parish was separated from Bongcheon-dong Parish in 1994. It was created to serve the growing Catholic population of the Gwanak area more closely.

The community pursued construction of a permanent church, and Archbishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk dedicated the present building on October 31, 1999. Contemporary reporting notes that the complex included the main church, a small chapel, hall, Eucharistic adoration room, and pastoral meeting rooms. The current name Haengun-dong later became standard, while Catholic sources continued for a time to use expressions such as “Haengun-dong (Nakseongdae) Church.”

In the 2000s the parish became a mother parish for newer communities. GoodNews parish information records that Nakseongdaedong Parish was established in 2005 from Nakseongdae Parish, identified as today’s Haengun-dong Parish. Inheon-dong Parish also separated from the former Nakseongdae Parish in the same period, making Haengun-dong an important base in the development of the Gwanak District’s parish network.
