About this place

The Site of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office is a Catholic historical site around 134 Tongil-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, near the Korean Red Cross Hospital. During the Joseon period the provincial office exercised administrative and judicial authority, and during the Sinyu Persecution of 1801 Catholics arrested in Gyeonggi were brought here for interrogation and punishment.

The site is included on the Seoul Catholic Pilgrimage Route's “Way of Life.” It is especially remembered as the place where Blessed Peter Jo Yong-sam endured interrogation, professed his faith, and died in prison. It is not a shrine with a separate church building; the historical ground of the former government office itself is the object of remembrance and pilgrimage.

History & origins

Gyeonggi Gamyeong was the Joseon provincial government office where the governor of Gyeonggi exercised administrative, military, and judicial responsibilities. After the Korean Catholic community began in 1784 and spread through Gyeonggi, the Sinyu Persecution of 1801 brought arrested Catholics to this office for interrogation and punishment.

Among them was Peter Jo Yong-sam, who had learned the faith from Augustine Jeong Yak-jong. He was transferred to the Gyeonggi office, continued to profess his faith under severe punishment, received baptism in prison, and died there in March 1801. Beatified by Pope Francis in 2014, he is now especially remembered at this site, which forms part of the Seoul pilgrimage route's Way of Life.
