About this place
Gwangjang-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Seongdong–Gwangjin District 8 at 6 Gwangjang-ro 3-gil in Gwangjin-gu. It was established on September 7, 2000, and has St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus as its patron.
The parish serves Catholics in Gwangjang-dong through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. It developed from Guui-dong Parish and reflects St. Thérèse's spirituality of the “little way,” emphasizing faithful love in ordinary daily life.
History & origins
Gwangjang-dong Parish was one of the parishes newly established by the Archdiocese of Seoul on September 7, 2000. The official history of its mother parish, Guui-dong, records that on October 11 the records of 1,183 households and 3,432 Catholics were transferred to the newly created Gwangjang parish.
The archdiocesan establishment on September 7 and the practical transfer of parish records on October 11 are therefore best understood as distinct administrative stages in the formation of the same new community. The parish subsequently developed as a local Catholic center in eastern Gwangjin-gu.
